Mr. N64's Summary of
DOA2: Hardcore's Story and Play Mechanics

Story:
As bizarre a story as I've seen in a fighting game. A lot of the character stories have to do with the concept of a Shinobi clan and an evil being called a Tengu. Other plots include a troubled father-daughter relationship, evil cloning operations and the standard martial-arts-as-self-betterment concept. There's very little story development in the game other than to provide fodder for some short and dramatic cinema scenes.

Play Modes:

Play Mode Description
Story Reveal a character's story through several fights and cinema scenes.
Vs Play against a human opponent.
Tag Team 1-4 players. 2 players per team. When both are out, the match is over.
Sparring Practice your moves (list of moves is accessible on pause menu)
Survival Try to defeat as many CPU opponents as you can without losing. Collect items that appear after each victory.
Watch Watch two CPU players go at it endlessly.
Record Record a fight and save it to memory card for replay later on.
Team Battle 3 characters on a team. Defeat the other team's characters to win.

Controls:

Button Action
Customizable Can be changed on option screen. The "free" button is used to counter enemy attacks (it often helps to hold backwards on the d-pad when trying to counter).
