Part 3

What Happened

I do not know. Here are some of my thoughts and suggestions from others.

Gust of wind pushed the plane off the narrow runway before I could stop it?
I am shocked at the speed and do not adequately control the plane.
Lack of oxygen from flying at 9500 feet thus not making good decisions.
Tired after flying for 2 days on my longest cross-country.
Just going for a ride and no concern for leaving the runway (as is not a problem from my home base.)
Trike landing having less control.

Mechanical problems - have had problems with the alignment. It got so bad by Feb. 2000 that the plane would dart to either side as weight was lessened during takeoff. This may have been cause of earlier landings that ended off the runway.

What should I have done

Overfly the airport and checked the real wind.
Landed on 01. Make a 3 point or a wheel landing
Stopped at Durango first (wide, long, open runways) and then go on to Animas.
Stayed in the brush and stopped the plane there after I was off the runway.

Damage Done

Left wing tip needed to be repaired.
Had to open up about 5 feet of wing to complete repair.
Left fiberglass wheel pant destroyed. Repair more than replacement cost.
Right stabilizer damaged along with leading edge of elevator, which was bent back. (What did I hit?)
Gearbox was checked and had no damage but a belly patch had to be redone and written up.

The Repair

Repairs took 3 months. While my plane sat at Animas Airpark, someone stole my entire emergency kit. Whoever did this, had to work hard because it was under my other baggage that I had to leave. The emergency water jugs I had, plastic gallon jugs from the grocery store, sprung a leak and drained out in the baggage compartment. Not a real problem. The stabilizer section had to be removed and sent out for repairs. One side was completely fixed. They warned me that there was some corrosion on that side and I should consider fixing the other side. The wingtip had to be repaired and that was fixed at Animas. The belly patch was also fixed at Animas and recorded on a 337.
